Burrells of Thetford (Stamford, Lincolnshire: CMS Videos, 2002). VHS, 110 min.NOTES ON CONTENTS: On back cover: "Burrell steam engines, once built in the Norfolk market town of Thetford, are amongst the best loved traction engines in today's preservation movement. The St. Nicholas Works of Charles Burrell and Sons Ltd. never produced as many engines as the likes of John Fowler & Co. or Aveling & Porter, but they did gain a widespread reputation for quality and reliability. The first Burrell road engine emerged in 1856 followed by portable engines, ploughing engines, general purpose engines, road locomotives, road rollers and wagons all of which were built over the years. Our story discusses the development of these engines including the much admired Burrell showman's road locomotives and special scenic showman's road locomotives that proved so desirable with the country's travelling fairground fratemity. Sadly the name of Charles Burrell & Sons Ltd. ceased to exist in the early 1930s due to depressed market conditions following the First World War, and a disastrous association with the Agricultural & General Engineers Ltd. amalgam, which had been intended to rescue the situation. Happily, however, a relatively large percentage of Burrell engines have survived, allowing us to witness for ourselves, machines that are often referred to as "the Rolls Royce of steam engines". Featuring narration by Dave Milton, this is probably the most comprehensive video available that concentrates solely on the products of Charles Burrell & Sons Ltd." |
